Make a difference with a leading cloud environment
A next-generation cloud platform enables Bank of Queensland (BOQ) to meet fast-changing customer demands.
To drive down operating costs, innovate faster and meet the needs of changing customer expectations, BOQ are exiting all data centres and migrating to an updated Microsoft Azure cloud platform.
We helped BOQ at each stage of their transformation journey, from business case development through to design, implementation, and orchestration.
What was needed
- Modernisation of application landscape
- Best-in-class cloud platform
- Enhanced security and risk controls
- Reduced carbon footprint
- Adherence to increasing regulatory obligations
What we did
The CTO (Cloud Transformation Office) needed to be ‘more than simply excellent technology skills.’ BOQ leveraged KPMG’s in-depth knowledge of cross-functional capabilities across technology risk, regulatory, cyber, cloud engineering, finance, and tax to provide the breadth and depth of expertise needed, – with the final CTO being delivered in collaboration between BOQ, KPMG, and Microsoft.
KPMG worked with BOQ to develop a standardised end-to-end application treatment process - crucial for ensuring the program could securely industrialise and scale with the right resources, mandatory risk and regulatory activities, and CTO governance in place.
We also designed and implemented a secure cloud platform (Azure landing zones) suitable for migrating and supporting enterprise-wide applications – leveraging KPMG’s Azure Engine accelerator to apply best practice architecture, security, and automation. The updated Cloud Platform establishes the technical foundations for BOQ’s Cloud Transformation program and also supports broader transformation and digitisation activities.
What we delivered
- Iterative business cases to reduce the risk that is inherent in all large cloud programs
- A best-in-class scalable cloud platform for a simplified technology landscape
- A Cloud Transformation Office (CTO)
- Azure landing zones leveraging our Azure Engine accelerator – to enable BOQ to exit all data centres securely and reduce hosting costs by an estimated 24 percent.
- Improved operational resilience, reliability and efficiency
- Stronger risk management controls reducing outage duration
- Improved collaboration across locations
The work we have done in moving our infrastructure to the cloud will make it easier for BOQ to innovate and improve the way we work, making use of new native capabilities like AI and automation which aren’t as easily deployable on legacy infrastructure.
Strong collaboration between partners, like KPMG and Microsoft, is critical to delivering our ambitious transformation program which will improve the experience for our people and customers.
Biggest win
By selecting KPMG for designing and building the Azure Landing Zones, BOQ were able to accelerate delivery by accessing KPMG’s international network (KPMG UK) and use Azure Engine (KPMG accelerator) to deploy re-usable code with limited to no defects. An initiative that typically takes 6 months to a year to implement, cut back to 3 months.
